Vivienne Westwood
Welcome to another post readers! One more week we are here to talk a little more about fashion. Today we will meet Vivienne Westwood, who is one of the most important designers of the 20th century in England.
To start with, Throughout this post we will know more about the impact Vivienne Westwood has had on fashion both as an icon and as a designer. Valentine Marselou said in The Teen Magazine that Vivienne was a women who revolutionized the Fashion industry for introducing new fashion styles to the world for the first time. However, other sources said that her importance in this industry is related to her avant-garde designs. For this reason, she is considered one of the most influential and innovative fashion designers of the 20th century. She was an influence in the world of sustainable fashion too.This pioneering British fashion designer has dressed celebrities such as Princess Diana or Elton John.
Leather jackets, bondage trousers, and safety pins on clothing. These are some examples of Vivienne's work that are considered a badge of punk fashion (The Teen Magazine, 2023). Westwood was a woman who took part in the creation of punk and the new romantic styles. As we can see, she was an ambitious woman who was not satisfied to design clothes for just one style. She played with fashion by mixing styles, fabrics and shapes. For example, as it is said in Vivienne Westwood: punk, new romantic and beyond , she designed pants that mix references to army combat gear, motorcyclists’ leather and fetish wear.
Fashion for her was the way she had to express her feelings and let her creativity flow.
Whereas The Teen Magazine highlights specific pieces by the designer that have revolutionized the fashion industry such as her corset. Vivienne Westwood: punk, new romantic and beyond has focused more on developing a specific period of his career, such as her punky period. This English designer’s career has many aspects to comment on, so each website highlights different moments of her career.
Punk was the birth of a new era. She is known as the birthgiver of this fashion style due to the fact that her rebellious lifestyle in her clothing. Through her clothes, Westwood wanted to express the need for young people to make noise and her personal life experiences too.
On the other hand, Vivienne gave the corset another point of view. As we have seen in the previous post, corsets in the past were not made to be seen. It was considered an undergarment. Her rebellious mentality made her transform corsets from underwear into seductive garments. Her main intention was to make those women who wore this garment feel powerful and attractive.
As well known as her corset is her jewellery line, elegant pieces with a special touch that makes them unique.
Vivienne Westwood was an inspirational woman as well as one of the most revolutionary designers of the 20th century. Furthermore, she was a great activist not only in women's rights, but also in the climate change issue.
Vivienne's designs are not just designs. Throughout her career, she didn't hesitate to express her opinions when she thought that her voice needed to be heard. Through her designs and catwalks, she aimed to raise awareness of matters such as the climate crisis and its impact on today's world.Vivienne's designs and catwalks draw attention to such problems as the word 'activism' is for sure something that she promotes. Furthermore, she shows her support by donating to charities related to environmental problems as well (The Teen Magazine, 2023).
